FIRST EDITION OF SPENCER’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, WITH 50 SPLENDID FULL-PAGE STEEL-ENGRAVINGS, IN FULL PUBLISHER’S MOROCCO

SPENCER, J. A. History of the United States. From the Earliest Period to Administration of James Buchanan. New York: Johnson, Fry, (1858). Three volumes. Tall quarto, original publisher’s full brown morocco gilt, raised bands, all edges gilt.

First edition of Spencer’s influential 19th-century history, richly illustrated with 50 full-page steel engravings, including portraits of Founding Fathers, presidents and many dramatic Revolutionary War scenes after the artistry of Alonzo Chappel, Emanual Leutze, Thomas Nast and others, containing engraved frontispieces and title pages and two facsimiles, handsomely bound in publisher’s original full morocco gilt.

Historian Jesse James Spencer was a prominent Protestant minister who also authored “a number of theological works, educational texts, travel accounts, and a History of the United States… This work is illustrated with steel engravings after designs by Alonzo Chappel, Emanuel Leutze, Thomas Nast and other artists” (Mccoll, Images, 13). Artist Thomas Hart Benton was especially influenced by Spencer’s History and was “struck by the book’s engravings,” crediting them with inspiring him to create a new vision for American art (Wolff, Thomas Hart Benton, 162). Sabin 89339.

Text and plates generally fresh with light scattered foxing. A handsome near-fine copy of this influential work.
