Manuscript Koran Leaf

LOVELY EXTREMELY LARGE 14TH- OR 15TH-CENTURY ILLUMINATED PERSIAN MANUSCRIPT KORAN LEAF

ILLUMINATED LEAF. Manuscript Koran leaf. Persia, 14th or 15th century. Single large leaf, measuring 11-1/2 by 15-1/2 inches, written in black ink and illuminated in gold, white, blue, and orange inks; handsomely window framed, entire piece measures 18 by 23-1/2 inches.

Lovely and extremely large 14th- or 15th-century illuminated manuscript Koran leaf from Persia, with nine lines of bold black naskhi script and illuminated rosettes between verses executed in gold, blue, and black inks, as well as a large illuminated marginal device in blue, gold, black, white, and orange inks, handsomely matted.

This highly desirable and quite large leaf is from a 14th or 15th-century Koran of Persian origin, a magnificent calligraphic example. The text is from Surah 23, Al-Mu’minun, The Believers, verses 80 through 88. It bears nine lines of bold and elegant black naskhi script with diacritics and vowel points also in black ink. The lovely illuminated rosettes between verses are rendered in gold, black, and blue inks. The large marginal device with a circular center medallion is rendered in blue, black, gold, white, and orange inks.

Tiny marginal paper repair, very occasional smudging, and a bit of very faint waterstaining and discoloration mainly to margins. An exceptionally early and desirable piece.
