HINTON, S. E. The Outsiders. New York: Viking, (1967). Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Hinton’s first novel, a scarce presentation copy warmly inscribed by her on the title page in the year of publication, “To Mae Cosgrove—I hope you enjoy my book! Best wishes, Susie Hinton , 1967.”

Written when she was only 17, Susan Eloise Hinton’s first book was praised as “an impressive performance… a book alive with the fresh dialogue of her contemporaries” (New York Times). Outsiders went on to make the “New York Herald Tribune Best Teenage Books” list and was the “Chicago Tribune Book World Spring Book Festival Honor Book” in the year of its publication. It was also the basis of the acclaimed Francis Ford Coppola film starring Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe and Diane Lane.

Book fine; very minor dampstaining to verso, light edge-wear with small closed tear to front panel of bright near-fine dust jacket. Scarce inscribed.
