“A FEW MORE WHACKS OF THE ICE-AXE, A FEW VERY WEARY STEPS, AND WE WERE ON THE SUMMIT OF EVEREST”: HIGH ADVENTURE, SIGNED BY EDMUND HILLARY, DEDICATEE GEORGE LOWE'S COPY

HILLARY, Edmund. High Adventure. London: Hodder & Stoughton, (1955). Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Hillary’s account of his life as a mountain-climber, signed by him on the title. The copy of noted mountaineer George Lowe, one of the dedicatees of this work, with his bookplate, ownership signature on the half title, and additional signature on the Preface/Dedication page.

"The Everest saga would now appear to be complete with this latest book—the story of the 1953 climb written by the man probably most responsible for the final hours of supreme effort which made the British expedition victorious" (New York Times, contemporary review). Illustrated with numerous maps, sketches and photographic plates. In first-issue dust jacket, without Daily Mail blurb on front flap. Neate 369. Bookplate and ownership signatures of noted mountaineer George Lowe who, with Hillary, served on Sir John Hunt's successful 1953 British expedition of Everest, and later married Hunt's daughter Susan. Lowe was one of four men to whom Hillary dedicated the present book: "To my old friend George Lowe for so many years of cheerful comradeship." Lowe was also part of Sir Vivian Fuchs' Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1955-58, the first expedition to traverse Antarctica by land.

Interior fine; bumping to top outer corner of rear board. Dust jacket fine and fresh. A fine signed copy with exceptional provenance.
