WITH 65 LOVELY FOLIO PHOTOGRAVURES OF LOS ANGELES AND SURROUNDING SCENERY

(LOS ANGELES) FRIEND, Herve. Picturesque Los Angeles County, California. Illustrative and Descriptive. Chicago: American Gravure Company, 1887. Folio (10 by 12-1/2 inches), original three-quarter maroon morocco sympathetically rebacked, renewed marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

First edition, superbly illustrated with 65 fine photogravures of views in and around Los Angeles in the 1880s. A very nice copy of this scarce title.

“To fully illustrate the many beautiful spots to be found in Los Angeles County… we have taken the choicest views from varied subjects… to familiarize the tourist and resident with localities as will excite and interest them” (Preface). Photographer Herve Friend was one of the most skilled landscape photographers working in the United States in the 1880s and Picturesque Los Angeles is his crowning work. According to another Los Angeles photographer of the period, C.C. Pierce, Friend was “the father of artistic photography in southern California” (New Notes of California Libraries, No. 5). Includes images of the San Gabriel Mountains, Santa Monica, Arroyo Seco, Long Beach, San Gabriel Canyon, Catalina Harbor, and even an image of the photographer’s crew and pack animals. Cowan, 397.

A few minor marginal closed tears to first few text leaves only, not touching text. Plates clean and fine, each with original tissue guard. A handsome copy in excellent condition of this increasingly scarce title.
