First printing of this volume of lovely illustrations of Japanese folktales, an out of series copy on vélin alfa. Warmly inscribed by the author on the verso of the limitation page: “À Monsieur Doreau: mes souvenirs. T. Fujita 1929” (with name also written in Japanese).
Beautifully illustrated in Japanese woodblock print style, with 13 Japanese folktales divided into the categories of water, earth, sky, and fire. 16 plates in full color, with in-text illustrations, headpieces and tailpieces in two colors. Translations and illustrations by the famed artist Tsugouhara Foujita, a Japanese artist who moved to Paris in 1913 and became friends with Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani, Soutine, Léger, and Gris. Foujita applied French techniques to Japanese artistic styles. Text in French.
