“MAY THEY ALWAYS BE PLEASURABLE”: SOUVENIR WRAPPER FROM NEW YORK’S FAMED HURRICANE NIGHTCLUB, INSCRIBED BY DUKE ELLINGTON, ACCOMPANIED BY A VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT OF ELLINGTON AND “EVIE” ELLIS AT THE CLUB

ELLINGTON, Duke. Hurricane Club Souvenir Signed. WITH: Photograph. New York: Hurricane, circa 1943. Two items. Partial original tan front wrapper detached (measures 6-1/2 by 7-3/4 inches), in manuscript on the verso; vintage photographic print (measures 5 by 6-1/4 inches). Vintage photographic print and inscription matted and framed with a copy of the souvenir wrapper, entire piece measures 24 by 15 inches.

Vintage souvenir program from New York’s legendary Hurricane nightclub, circa 1943, partial front wrapper, boldly inscribed on the verso by Ellington, “To Charlotte & ‘Strick’ & their Memories, May they always Be Pleasurable, Eve and Duke,” accompanied by a scarce vintage photographic print of Ellington and Beatrice “Evie” Ellis, his longtime companion and love of his life, both seated in the club at a table with the uniformed serviceman and his companion who are the likely recipients of Ellington’s warm inscription.

Duke Ellington’s six-month engagement in 1943 at Dave Wolper’s Hurricane Club on Broadway marked his first New York club-gig since he played the Cotton Club in 1938. This detached partial wrapper from a Hurricane Souvenir program is wonderfully inscribed on the verso by Ellington. His inscription is very likely to the uniformed soldier and his companion who are pictured in the accompanying photographic print—which shows Ellington and Beatrice “Evie” Ellis, his longtime love, seated at a table in the nightclub alongside the soldier and his date. At the time of Ellington’s gig at the Hurrigane, his band was at the height of its popularity, boasting such star soloists as Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges, Rex Stewart, Lawrence Brown and great vocalists Betty Roché and Jimmy Britton.

Print and signed program in extremely good condition, inscription clean and bright. Beautifully matted and framed.
