EARLY PHOTO-ESSAY ON THE YANKEE CLIPPER, SIGNED BY DIMAGGIO AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO SPORTS BROADCASTER AL HELFER
(DIMAGGIO, Joe) SCHOOR, Gene. The Thrilling Story of Joe DiMaggio. (New York): Frederick Fell, (1950). Slim, square octavo, original photographic red paper covers.
First edition of this wonderful “picture cavalcade” of DiMaggio’s life, with 100 photographs and 12 “pinups,” signed on the front cover by DiMaggio and inscribed on the half title, “To Al Helfer: A top sports broadcaster— a wonderful guy. Best Wishes, Gene Schoor.”
This revealing collection of candid photographs documents Joltin’ Joe’s development from an awkward kid to one of the game’s most graceful athletes— a picture player both at bat and in center field. Many rate DiMaggio’s 56-consecutive-game hitting streak in 1941 as the top baseball feat of all time. Smith 12344. Grobani 8-40. The recipient of this copy, Al Helfer (aka “Mr. Radio Baseball”), worked six World Series, ten All-Star Games and manned the broadcast booth for the Yankees, the Dodgers and the Oakland Athletics.
Interior and signatures fine, moderate creasing to fragile paper covers. An extremely good signed copy, with splendid baseball associations.
