“THE GREATEST EXPLORER OF HIS AGE”: THE LIFE AND EXPLORATIONS OF DAVID LIVINGSTONE, WITH TINTED LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES, IN PUBLISHER’S DELUXE MOROCCO-GILT BINDING WITH ORIGINAL BRASS CLASPS

(LIVINGSTONE, David) [ROBERTS, John S.]. The Life and Explorations of David Livingstone. London: Adam, circa 1874. Large quarto, publisher’s deluxe full navy pictorial morocco gilt, original gilt-painted brass clasps, raised bands, all edges gilt.

Splendidly illustrated edition of the life of Livingstone, the first European to cross the African continent, with bold chromolithographic frontispiece and title page, color map of Africa showing his discoveries, and 19 lovely full-page tinted lithographic plates. A most desirable copy in fine original publisher’s deluxe binding with original gilt-painted brass clasps, catches, and edge-pieces.

African missionary and explorer, David Livingstone became the first European to discover the Zambezi River, as well as Victoria Falls, which he named. He is “known to history as the greatest explorer of his age and a dedicated humanitarian who devoted his life to the eradication of the African slave trade. He was a national hero to his contemporaries and time has confirmed his reputation as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, of the eminent Victorians, both in his achievement and in his influence” (Martelli). This edition was first published shortly after his death in 1873. The elaborately blind- and gilt-stamped boards, with original gilt-painted brass clasps and furniture lining the board edges, portray Livingstone reaching for a gun as he is pawed by a lion, and a native with arms raised and broken shackles.

A bit of rubbing to gilt painted brass furniture and clasps, elsewhere gilt bright, interior clean and fine. A beautiful copy in publisher’s deluxe morocco-gilt in very nearly fine condition.
