Colton's Map of the States and Territories West of the Mississippi River

COLTON’S LARGE HAND-COLORED POCKET-MAP OF THE AMERICAN WEST, 1864

COLTON, Joseph Hutchins. Colton’s Map of the States and Territories West of the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. New York: J.H. Colton, 1864. 12mo, original brown cloth gilt, original color-outlined lithographic folding pocket-map measuring 40-1/2 by 29 inches. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

First edition of Colton’s lithographic folding pocket-map of the Western States, originally based on Johnson’s County Map of the Republics of North America (1856), with the expanded borders of Nevada.

This handsome hand-colored lithographic map of Western States and Territories is representative of the Colton firm’s reputation for producing “the best grade of geographical publications and the most extensive house in America for many years for the manufacture of maps of every kind, atlases, [and] school geographies” (Ristow, 315). “From 1850 to 1887, a major specialty of the Colton firm was the production of pocket railroad maps and guides, used by the flood of new immigrants” (Jo Margaret Mano). Of particular note in this map are the borders of Nevada, which are depicted farther west and north than they are today. Nevada’s hasty entry to statehood in 1864 came as a result the Union’s need to finance the Civil War, in this case, from taxes collected from Nevada’s extensive silver mines. Additionally, her borders were expanded to encompass a strategically important pass, located on the Old Spanish Trail just east of Las Vegas and therefore within the United States territory. “Colton was inordinately fond of the Pony Express… for he continued to show the ‘Pony Express Route’ without regard to the death of that enterprise” (Wheat V, 107). Wheat 1099. Streeter 3072. See Schwartz & Ehrenberg, 273. Owner signatures of Morris Cooper Foot, Union infantryman in the 9th New York Infantry.
