THE NONESUCH DON QUIXOTE, ILLUSTRATED BY KAUFFER

CERVANTES. Don Quixote de la Mancha. London: Nonesuch Press, (1930). Two volumes. Royal octavo, original full tan morocco, raised bands, uncut.

Limited Nonesuch Press edition of Cervantes’ masterpiece, number 49 of 1475 copies, with 21 lithographs by E. McKnight Kauffer printed at the Curwen Press and colored en pochoir.

"Small wonder if the world received Don Quixote with delight! There was nothing like unto it before: there has been nothing to eclipse it since" (Rius). This handsome printing relies on the 1743 seventh edition, with explanatory notes by John Ozell. The Nonesuch Press was founded in 1923 by Francis Meynell, David Garnett and Vera Mendel in the basement premises under the Birrell & Garnett bookshop in London, with the intent to make books "for those among collectors who also use books for reading" (Ransom, 169). The book's illustrator Edward McKnight Kauffer was initially a painter, but abandoned that medium in 1921 in favor of poster design. "His connections to the artistic avant-garde in France and Britain placed him at the forefront of developments in the visual language of advertising during the 1930s. He ranks as one of the most significant designers of the 20th century—in Britain or anywhere in the world" (Rennart). Without scarce original slipcase. Ransom, Nonesuch 70. See Cave, 190-91.
