INSCRIBED BY “THE BEST CATCHER IN THE BUSINESS”

CAMPANELLA, Roy. Publicity illustration signed. No place, no date. Black-and-white printed illustration, measuring 7-1/2 by 8-1/2 inches. Matted and framed with 1953 Life magazine cover, entire piece measures 19-1/2 by 27 inches.

Original printed publicity illustration of Campanella from his time with the Brooklyn Dodgers, inscribed: “Best Wishes to Joe. Roy Campanella.”

The illustration shows Campanella tensed and ready to go after an unseen ball, wearing a glove on one hand with his catcher’s mask dangling off the other. Called “the best catcher in the business” by Paul Richards, Campanella was a star in the Negro Leagues and for the Brooklyn Dodgers before his career was tragically cut short by a paralyzing auto accident.
