LARGE (16 X 12”) ORIGINAL SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON ADMIRAL BYRD’S SECOND ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION

BYRD, Richard E. Original photograph signed. [Little America, Antarctica]: circa February 1934. Large sepia-toned albumen photograph, measuring 16 inches by 12 inches; framed, entire piece measures 21 by 17 inches.

Wonderful large original photograph of a dog-sled traversing the main “highway” to Little America, signed by Byrd.

Byrd made a second expedition to survey and explore the Antarctic, during which he spent five months alone in a hut situated under the Barrier Face more than a hundred miles from his provisional base, Little America. This dramatic image depicts a dog-team, emerging over a rise, winding its way on the “highway” to Little America. “In the loose, soft snow the dogs made heavy going of it. From now on it would be all heart and sinew, for them as well as the men.” (Discovery, 74).

Signature bold. Inch-long closed tear just under the horizon, a few minor creases to edges. A splendid image.
