Extremely large, vintage Apollo 15 landing site chart—one of the largest maps produced for the Apollo program—showing the traverses of the first lunar rover, accompanied by a vintage lunar orbit chart, both inscribed by mission commander David Scott.
Scott “made his third space flight as spacecraft commander of Apollo 15, July 26-August 7, 1971… the fourth manned lunar landing mission and the first to visit and explore the moon’s Hadley Rille and Apennine Mountains… The lunar module, ‘Falcon,’ remained on the lunar surface for 66 hours and 54 minutes (setting a new record for lunar surface stay time)… Using ‘Rover-1’ to transport themselves and their equipment along portions of Hadley Rille and the Apennine Mountains, Scott and [lunar module pilot James] Irwin performed a selenological inspection and survey of the area and collected 180 pounds of lunar surface materials… [Apollo 15 marks the] longest distance traversed on [the] lunar surface… Scott is only one of three astronauts who have flown both earth orbital and lunar Apollo Missions” (NASA). The impressive chart of the lunar surface (“Lunar Uncontrolled Photomap, Rima Hadley”)—one of the largest lunar landing site maps made during the Apollo program—shows the two large mountains of Hadley Delta and Mount Hadley, as well as the long winding valley of Rima Hadley. The LM landing site, ALSEP experiment site, the three long traverses by the crew using the lunar rover and the 12 “station stops” where the crew stopped the rover to gather samples and make measurements are all shown. The lunar flight chart (“Apollo Lunar Flight Chart (ALF), Apollo Mission 15”) plots the range of 74 planned CSM orbital ground tracks around the Moon.
