PERKINS, Charles E. The Pinto Horse. Santa Barbara: Wallace Hebberd, 1927. Oblong quarto, original paper boards, embossed cover illustration, uncut; pp. 76. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $7200.

First edition, with a signed original pen-and-ink illustration of a cowboy on horseback by Edward Borein and “Charles Elliot Perkins-Santa Barbara-California, May 1928” written in the author’s hand on the front free endpaper.

A story chronicling the imagined adventures of a Pinto Horse in the American West, with a color frontispiece and many beautiful illustrations by Edward Borein. "His work is well known for its truth as well as artistically. Borein cowboys and their mounts are true to the last strap and buckle" (Carr, 35). Contains a printed foreword by Owen Wister, Western writer and friend of Teddy Roosevelt. Laid-in typewritten slip stating that this is the author's own copy; partially erased note stating same on rear pastedown. Bookseller's stamp.

Text fine, joints starting but firm, small expert repair to spine, minor wear to spine-ends, light discoloration to edges of spine, and light foxing to front cover. A very good copy, better than often found, signed by the author with a wonderful signed pen-and-ink drawing by the illustrator.
